Yellow Check Shirt + Black Jorts: A Tomboy Streetwear Fit
I love fashion, but I hate shopping.
I blame my mom a little. She used to take me and my brother shopping when we were kids and we would be in stores for hours. Like, hours. The kind of shopping trip where you start losing your mind in the middle of a fitting room.
Then add being queer, masc leaning, and not built like the mannequin, and shopping becomes a full emotional workout.
Women’s stuff can feel too feminine. Men’s stuff almost works, but then the waist, hips, or chest get weird. And a lot of androgynous brands are either expensive, too plain, or honestly just not giving enough.
This one’s the same formula, dressed down and dialed up at the same time.
The fit
Culture Kings Checkered Boxy Button Up Shirt Yellow Check

The shirt: Yellow check short sleeve, layered over a white tee This is the move that takes the fit from “regular” to “intentional.” A shirt over a tee adds dimension, lets you play with proportions, and means you can unbutton or button up depending on the temperature. Yellow is hard to wear — most people grab navy or white and call it done. The yellow check is the whole personality of this fit.
The shorts: UNIQLO jorts

The shorts: Black jorts Same energy as the blue ones, but black does something different. It anchors the whole fit and gives it more of a streetwear feel than a summer-cookout feel. The wallet chain is doing work here too — small detail, big personality.
The shoes: Steve Madden Langsten loafer in black

Chunky black loafers are kind of cheat code right now. Like I’m going out to a nice dinner but really I’m just chilling in Dime square drinking a cheap beer.
They make the jorts feel more intentional and less like you’re on your way to a barbecue. The lug sole gives the outfit some weight, which helps when you’re wearing longer shorts.
The Details: White ribbed calf socks and Wallet Chain

The wallet chain – This is the part that makes it feel less like I just put on shorts and a shirt. It gives the fit a little edge and makes the jorts feel more intentional.
These socks – White socks with loafers just work. They make the whole thing feel more styled without doing too much.
Why it works
Same four-part formula: Loose shorts. Boxy shirt. Heavy shoe. White sock.
The yellow is what makes this fit yours. Swap it for navy and it’s clean. Swap it for white and it’s basic. Yellow check + a wallet chain is Chinatown at 6 PM, no plans, looking for a fight or a cigarette.
Same bones. Different mood entirely. Once you have the formula, you stop shopping for outfits and start shopping for colors.
